Pondlady is correct.......gophers burrow. If you are building a raised bed with legs, then make it high enough so it won't hurt your back when you are tending the box. If you are building a raised bed from the ground and using 2x12 or similar side wood, lay 2 layers of gopher wire on the bottom and staple or attach it to the side of the bottom pieces. Make sure there are no gaps in the wire cause those little buggers will find that hole!

How high does a raised garden bed have to be?
I plan to build a raised garden bed in my back yard to grow vegetables (tomatoes, squash, etc.). I am planning to raise the bed only about 5.5" from the ground. Is that enough to make a difference or does the bed have to be higher? It seems like there are lots of variations on bed height from about 5.5" to about 30". I don't know if this makes a difference, but I am in Zone 7. Thanks for the help.-

If you are plainning to plant with deep root system (carrots...) you will need at least 8". For regular rooting crop like tomato, squash.... 6" should be enough. Make sur that your bed is wide enough to allow root spreading and to allow the heat to disipate. Water retention will also be lower in a smaller bed. In a warm zone this can mean more watering. Use a mixture base with a good compost rather than peat moss.Marc

Cedar for both purposes if you can afford it. If money is a factor, just use much cheaper pine. Get it in 2X (actually 1.5") thickness with the width you desire. Use 3"deck screws to do the framing. Pine will give out in about 5 or 6 years and then you can rebuild the frames with new lumber. Not a big deal. Use cedar chips or bark as a surface topping to repel some, but not all insects. Also keeps weeds down.You need the 2X limber to make a good strong frame. 2X in cedar is a really big jump in cost from 1X cedar.

Building a raised garden bed?
The girlfriend wants to build a raised flowerbed/garden. We found a good deal on the massive amount of dirt needed, but I need to figure out the best and most cost-effective way to build the box. Stone is way too expensive, so I was thinking of using those rounded posts (that are flat on the side). With very little in the way of tools (I have the basic tool box, but no power tools other than a modest drill), how would you assemble this? Bolts? What needs to be done to the spot the box is to be placed on, other than leveling it out? Do I need to seal the spaces between the posts? Thanks.

What is the best way to level out the ground where the box will go? There is a slight, maybe 1-1.5% grade.-

Dirt will seal any gaps. Check around for scrap lumber or post an ad on craigslist for scrap. I don't recommend treated lumber.You can just nail it together or use long exterior screws.
Use grass and weed killer on the ground before you cover it with soil, preferably clove oil or another organic mixture. You may want to till the ground first as well to allow better root growth.

Either till the ground to level it or build your box higher at the low end.
